Burnette Bay
Burnette Bay is approx. 25 nautical miles from Port Hardy across some open stretches and further if you island hop. Island hopping is the best and safest. Upon arrival you would be greeted with a beautiful sandy beach and rolling surf. You get a chance to practise your surf landing skills (or your quick wet exit). You could also enjoy a nice wilderness bath in the slightly brackish river (Evader Creek). This would be a great place to set up camp for a few days.
We camped there for 6 six days with our children when they were small and again for 8 days when they were teenagers. It is truly an unforgettable awesome place, extremely remote, and a true paradise.
These two spots, Burnett and Shelter Bay are ideal for the more adventurous and experienced kayakers. This type of kayaking requires good judgment and decision making skills as well as kayaking skills. Surf landings sometimes are inevitable, so have that skill before you go as well as a surf helmet. Be sure to check out Randy Washburn's funky emergency cabin at the north end of Burnette Bay slightly off into the bush. A great resource if you're ever stranded without a useable tent. Be careful with the wood stove and don't forget to sign the log book.
