Part 1 - Rescue Skills in the Pool
The Rescue Skills lesson can be taught in the pool and will be the primary focus of the lesson. Once learnt, rescues should be reviewed in a cold water situation at a later date. It can be either an excellent refresher for those who have previously taken a pool course or those with paddling experience. For your own peace of mind and safety, it is vitally important that you learn to get out of your boat in a capsize situation and then how to get back into your kayak quickly and efficiently. One of the techniques we practise is the stirrup rescue for reentry as it is easy to learn and not as reliant on upper body strength as most other techniques. Emphasis is placed on the assisted rescue incorporating the use of a paddling partner, although there is usually time to teach the self re-entry as well.Part 2 - Basic Kayaking Skills in the Ocean or Lake
The Rescue Skills lesson is the same as in the pool but approximately two hours longer during which time we will cover the basic essentials to get you started as a kayaker.
In addition to basic rescues, you'll be learning the following paddling skills:- Lifting and carrying a kayak
- Entering and exiting a kayak safely and securely
- Forward and reverse paddling
- Forward and reverse sweep strokes
- Stopping
- Kayak component

- Clothing
- Injury prevention
