Beachcombers Gallery

Although not really beachcombers in the true sense of the word, it sounded a little less offencive than buccaneers as a description of some of the kayakers who wash ashore in Port Hardy on their way to that next island in whatever direction it lies. They stop briefly in Port Hardy, some touch our lives briefly, some become revolving acquaintances, while others become lifelong friends. This gallery is meant to briefly document these water logged travellers with a few words and a picture or two. It's something I've wanted to do for many years, and have only got to it now. There will be some back dating where I have enough information and permission, then I will try keep it up to date.

Vancouver Island Record Attempt

Kierron Tastagh and Jeff Norville in Vancouver Island Circumnavigation Record Attempt MAY 2007A good friend of mine who hales from across the pond to a place called the Isle of Man operates a company called Adventurous Experiences. I first met Keirron Tastagh more than a few years ago when a group came over to Port Hardy looking for a kayaking outfitter able to help them facilitate an expedition of approx 40 persons of 17/19 yrs. of age in their quest for the Duke of Edinburgh award. It was a big undertaking for Odyssey Kayaking, a relatively new company on the kayaking scene. At the end of it all, it was a huge success; we made a lot of new friends, shared good experiences and helped shape us all in ways that helped us tackle new obstacles.

They couldn’t have chosen a better place to come for their expedition.

Since then we have handled a few other big groups as well as the folk from the Isle of Man again.

Keirron from UK and Jeff Norville of Portland, Oregon, got as I understand it, committed to trying to circumnavigate Vancouver Island in record time. I don’t know if it was the pints at the time or the testosterone, but they ended up trying it and succeeded in circumnavigating Vancouver Island in 19 days finishing on May 30 2007.
